Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Review

I have been eyeing 3D printers for a while now, but have had some meh experiences early in their development that had me hesitant to get back into it because my frustration tolerance for items that aren't out of box stunners is pretty low. So after lots of research, I settled on Elegoo's Centauri Carbon 2 with various filaments to try out.

The print quality is top notch! Layer lines are tight, first layers stick without any fuss, and I've had multicolor prints come out looking super clean. That's not me being dramatic either, I've compared results side by side with printers that cost noticeably more and this thing is holding its own, sometimes outright beating them on fine detail. For a machine in this price range that feels almost too good to be true. It's not flawless, there's the usual multicolor printing tax where you get purge waste and the occasional blob at a color change, but the actual print surface quality once it's done is consistently good.

The camera feature was a nifty bonus that I really ended up loving. The lighting inside the chamber is bright enough that I can actually see what's happening instead of squinting at a dark blob through the door. More than once I've caught a print starting to warp or a layer starting to shift early enough to stop it before it turned into a spaghetti nightmare that eats through an entire spool of filament for nothing. That alone has paid for itself a few times over just in materials saved. Being able to check in remotely instead of walking over to the printer every twenty minutes has genuinely changed how comfortable I am starting longer prints and just leaving them alone.

Cost to performance is where this printer really earns its spot. I went in expecting to make compromises somewhere given the price, and instead I keep finding myself comparing it favorably to machines that cost a good chunk more. It's not the fastest thing on the market and the build volume isn't enormous, but for what you're paying you're getting features that used to be reserved for higher end printers, and the reliability has been there too. It doesn't feel like a budget printer that happens to work, it feels like a genuinely good printer that happens to be affordable.

Where it starts to feel a little limiting is the four spool cap on the Canvas system. Four colors at once is honestly fine for most of what I print, but I keep running into projects where I want a fifth color in there and have to either compromise on the palette or manually swap spools mid print, which kind of defeats the point of having the automated system in the first place. It's not a dealbreaker, just one of those things where I finish a print and think "man, I wish I had two more slots for this." Filament storage sitting external on top of the printer instead of somewhere enclosed is a minor annoyance too, especially with anything that likes to absorb moisture, but it's a manageable one.

Filament cost is the other quiet win here. Whatever spools Elegoo is pushing for this thing are priced low enough that experimenting with new colors doesn't feel like a financial decision every time, which matters a lot when you're running a four color setup and burning through material faster than a single spool machine ever would. Between the affordable filament and the fact the camera keeps me from wasting it on ruined prints, the actual cost of running this machine day to day ends up feeling pretty painless compared to what I expected going in. My favorite color has been the Galaxy Peacock Blue!

It's not a perfect machine, the spool situation and some of the loading quirks keep it from being flawless, but for the price and what it actually delivers on prints, it's hard to be too critical of it and I would definitely recommend Elegoo to anyone looking for a grab n' go 3D printer that has solid prints without breaking the bank!

One note though, I was hesitant on the delivery insurance but it was 100% worth it. Delivery companies are getting crappier and crappier, which was exampled by the driver leaving my package with all the filament in an unknown location never to be seen again. Seel fixed the issue with no problem, so I would highly recommend getting it for big purchases like this for sure!
